Is FIFA 22 animation good or bad for the game?

Here is the good, the bad and the bottom line with FIFA 22. When new animation tech is implemented in an annual sports game, the positive or negative impact is usually difficult to describe. You can feel it, but putting the impact into words is a challenge.

Should you buy FIFA 22?

If you love football, in whatever hue or flavour, FIFA 22 should be part of your life. FIFA 22 recreates everything special about a beloved and complex pastime, as well as its greed and superficiality. The game succeeds and fails in the same way the sport does, and nothing encapsulates this like FIFA Ultimate Team.

What are the new features of FIFA 22?

The most trumpeted of FIFA 22's new features is the HyperMotion technology that has been added to the gameplay, which allows the most realistic movement and feel from in-game players ever seen in the franchise.

Is FIFA 22 the prettiest game so far?

On a purely aesthetic level, FIFA 22 is also the prettiest installment so far. Much has been made of the game’s hair graphics – which are, admittedly, even more impressive than last year – but less has been said about its equally realistic sweat effects and shiny bald heads.

Is FIFA 22 gameplay better?

FIFA 22 is more challenging than FIFA 21, and while this may appear to be a disadvantage to newcomers, it is actually beneficial. This added difficulty increases the competitiveness of each match and eliminates the possibility of absurdly large scorelines, especially in offline games.

Is FIFA 22 current gen worth it?

FIFA 22 feels like it was made for next-gen consoles and it certainly shows. While there are still some small AI hiccups and frustrating microtransactions leftover from previous years, FIFA 22 is a smoother and better-looking experience than ever before, setting a new visual standard for sports games.

How is FIFA 22 different from FIFA 21?

FIFA 22 feels more difficult than FIFA 21, which makes each match more competitive and initially rules out ridiculous high scorelines, particularly when playing offline games. Perhaps the most interesting and useful aspect in FIFA 22 is the advanced stats which now show at half-time and after every match.

Why should I buy FIFA 22?

FIFA 22 replicates the game's most iconic atmospheres with new pre-match sequences including light shows, upgraded lighting, new pitch textures, and big(ger) goal moments to recreate what it feels like to be on the pitch at the world's most famous stadiums.

Why should I get FIFA 22?

The Guardian might have said it best when they led with the headline, “a flamboyant multiplex of total football.” “Fifa 22 is absolutely unmistakably a Fifa game – it has the sophistication and polish we've come to expect, with all the player likenesses, authentic stadia and recognisable commentators we see every year.

Is FIFA 22 harder?

FIFA 22 feels more difficult than FIFA 21, which makes each match more competitive and initially rules out ridiculous high scorelines, particularly when playing offline games. Perhaps the most interesting and useful aspect in FIFA 22 is the advanced stats which now show at half-time and after every match.

Is FIFA 22 last FIFA?

EA Sports has announced that FIFA 23 will be the last in its long-running series of football video games.

Will FIFA 22 have World Cup?

Can I play the World Cup on FIFA 22? There is no branded World Cup mode within FIFA 22. In the past, it was possible to use your imagination to a certain extent and create your own World Cup via a custom offline tournament. However, even this is not possible now, due to a whole heap of missing national teams.

Gameplay

When it boils down to it, the thing we want to do most in a football video game is score goals — but the manner it's accomplished is often up for debate.

Career Mode

While the ever-popular Career Mode has remained relatively the same as FIFA 21, there are a couple of additions that make the experience more enjoyable.

Ultimate Team

Ultimate Team is FIFA's most popular online mode where gamers build a team with real-life players that are represented as cards. The base ratings of these cards hinge on a player's current ability, but they can grow if the players perform well in real life.

Verdict

While the gameplay does feel more authentic, and there have been several solid additions to the game modes, FIFA 22 is not a huge departure from its previous version. Like most editions of the game, FIFA 22 is a slight improvement that builds upon its predecessor.

Gameplay

I suppose the best place to start is with the gameplay, which feels a lot more rewarding than it has done in years gone by.

Graphics & Presentation

We've briefly touched upon the widely discussed Hypermotion Technology and the impact that it could have on the game. And it's safe to say that it did not disappoint!

Ultimate Team

There are obviously limitations with regards to the game modes that we can play within Ultimate Team, so we can only comment on the modes that we have been able to get stuck into.

Career Mode

The improvements to Career Mode were the selling points from EA in the build-up to the FIFA 22 release and, whilst there are noticeable improvements as far as the mode is concerned, we can't help feeling a little underwhelmed.

Pro Clubs

Again, the lack of players available to play this mode means that we haven't spent too much time on it, but we have played enough to get a decent take on what to expect.

8 Didn't Love: Career Mode

Every time a new FIFA game is announced, there are many fans who eagerly await news about improvements to the single-player modes, with a particular interest in a revamped Career Mode. Unfortunately, FIFA 22 follows the long trend of releases that treat Career Mode like an afterthought.

7 Loved: Visuals

Unsurprisingly, FIFA 22 continues its trend of offering spectacular visuals to compliment the gameplay. The wide shots of stadiums look particularly nice and are now at the point where it can be hard to differentiate it from real life.

6 Didn't Love: Heavy-Handed Microtransaction Implementation

As touched upon before, microtransactions are back and are just as morally questionable as before. During the build-up to the game's launch, there was some hope of improvements to the pack opening system, as it was announced that players could look into a pack before opening it.

5 Loved: HyperMotion Technology

Thankfully, FIFA 22 isn't completely devoid of new features. HyperMotion Technology was one of the most heavily advertised features in the build-up to FIFA 22 's release, and it thoroughly lives up to the hype.

4 Didn't Love: Absence Of A.I. Fouls

One difference in FIFA 22 that not many would have seen coming is the bizarre absence of A.I. fouls. For some reason, it is very rare that players find themselves taking a penalty or freekick when playing against the computer, as the A.I. almost never commits a foul.

3 Loved: More Balanced Gameplay

Aside from the lack of fouling, the overall balance of a match in FIFA 22 is far better than before. EA finally seems to have ironed out many of its most significant issues to create a match experience that feels far more akin to the real thing than before.

2 Didn't Love: Legacy Edition

It's worth taking the time to mention the Legacy Edition of FIFA 22, as clearly EA couldn't care less about it, so someone has to.

The beautiful game in motion

Let’s start by outlining what’s changed in FIFA 22. The biggest addition to this year’s game is the introduction of HyperMotion technology on next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Less is more

As for the game’s other major gameplay additions, it’s a mixed bag. FIFA 22 doesn’t waste time letting you know about them, either.

Career highlight

For many, the more exciting updates are to be found in Career Mode. For the first time ever, you’re now able to create your own team, crest, kit and stadium from scratch, a long-awaited addition that works well in some places, and not-so-well in others.

The usual suspects

The rest of FIFA 22 is a case of small improvements. Volta returns with a few new modes and abilities to try, though they don’t do enough to make EA’s street football sim worth any more of your time than before.

Verdict

All in all, then, FIFA 22 is less about its new modes or mechanical bells and whistles and all about the actual experience of playing FIFA. HyperMotion is the biggest and perhaps only faultless improvement to this year’s entry, but it’s enough to propel FIFA 22 into the annals of the series’ very best games.

Our Verdict - 4/5

  • We've briefly touched upon the widely discussed Hypermotion Technology and the impact that it could have on the game. And it's safe to say that it did not disappoint!
