Some players are going to hate us for saying this, but when you're just starting out, try not to defend with your centerbacks. The AI defense is usually pretty solid in the back, so you're better off attacking the player with the ball with a CDM. This gives you a bit of a safety net if you mess up.

By holding down R1 (RB) on defense, you can bring a second man over to attack the player with the ball. This puts more pressure on the offense as you start to overload them. You can also use this to pressure the ball with an AI defender while you close off a passing lane with the player you're directly controlling.

The first thing you need to know is how to recognize which players actually have a shot of reaching the ceiling you want them to reach. You can’t really see their expected potential anywhere, at least not expressed in anticipated overall ratings.
