How do you defend in FIFA 22?

Chasing players is important while defending in FIFA 22. However, simply sprinting along them isn't enough — players need to maintain pressure in some form or the other. Tapping O/B while pressing an attacker will cause the player to either shoulder-barge them or pull on their shirt.

What happens if you slide the ball in FIFA 22?

Sliding is the riskiest way to receive the ball in FIFA 22, and very often results in a warning, a yellow card, and sometimes even a red card (the player gets excluded from the match). Make sure you take the right angle of attack on the ball before you make the slide.

10 A Standing Tackle Should Be Used Only When It's Appropriate

Standing tackles are one of the best and most reliable ways to take the ball away from the opposition. It generally works most of the time, and a failed standing tackle doesn't really yield a major foul unless it occurs in the penalty box.

9 Sliding Challenges Have A Huge Risk-Reward Dynamic

Sometimes, a standing tackle simply isn't enough to take the ball away from the opposition. This is where the risky sliding tackle comes into the picture.

8 Always Keep Your Defensive Line Intact If Someone Gets A Red Card

Given that defenders are the last line that protects the keeper from an attacker, the probability of them getting a red card is higher. As a result, it becomes important to maintain formation in the event that a red card is attained during some last-ditch defending.

7 Jockeying Is The Best Way To Defend In The Game

Jockeying is one of the best ways to defend in the game. It basically forces a player to move their body towards the ball and automatically intercept the ball whenever possible.

6 A Goalkeeper Rush Should Only Be Used When Things Look Really Dire

Sometimes, even the best defense can be penetrated with a smart run or a great ball. This might lead to a situation where the player is charging towards the keeper without anyone else in their way.

5 Opt For Manual Player Switching To Keep Your Defensive Shape Intact

Switching players around is important to maintain pressure on opponents. However, automatically switching players can be a pain, since the defensive line can be disrupted if players switch over to a defender who's maintaining the final line.

3 Using A Teammate To Contain An Opponent Is A Great Way To Defend

Players will soon need to start using advanced techniques to defend against an attack. This is where using a teammate to contain the attacker ends up being wildly useful.

Five best ways to defend on FIFA 22

This may take a while to master but once you do, you’ll never go back. Everybody knows about the automatic player switching with the L1/LB button, but manual switching gives you so much more control. When defending flick the right stick in the direction of the player you want to control next and the game will give you that player.

How to practice defending on FIFA 22

Now you have all these tips you’ll want to put them into action. While playing games is the most obvious way there’s also a host of defending skill games accessible from the menu.

Players with best defending stats on FIFA 22

With these new defending tips, you probably want to know the players with the top defending stats in FIFA 22. Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk leads the way unsurprisingly but there’s also one centre midfielder that makes the top ten.

Stand Your Ground

First, being able to stand your ground in front of attackers, or Jockey, is one of the most important things when playing defense on FIFA 22. You can stand your ground by holding L2/LB when in control of a player without the ball.

Read the Plays

As we all know, defending doesn’t start in the last quarter of the pitch. In FIFA, reading your opponent’s intentions as well as making sure you are able to cut their passes can help you take full control of the game in only a few minutes.

FIFA 22 Guide: How To Master Defending

Attack wins you games, defense wins you titles. With this guide, you will crunch the opposing strikers in FIFA 22!

Unexpected error

To fully master defending, you also need to learn how to switch between players. There are two options. Either you simply press L1 or LB and you play an automatically selected player. But you can also manually select your next player with the right stick. We recommend the manual version here, so you really have everything in your own hands.

Switch player

In FIFA 22, you can freely switch between players, so you can always control the one closest to the ball. The player you can currently switch to has a red triangle with a yellow center above his head.

Taking the ball

A simple way of taking the ball (X on PS, A on Xbox) is, in many cases, the most effective and safest way to get it back without putting yourself at unnecessary risk - like when performing an aggressive tackle (O on PS, B on Xbox) or a slide-in (Square on PS, X on Xbox).

Pressing the other player

In FIFA 22, you can enjoy an improved player pressure feature. If you want to engage another player to try and take the ball, simply press the appropriate button (R1/RT) and the nearest player will join the fight for the ball for 4 seconds (a green triangle will appear above their head).

Sliding tackle

Sliding is the riskiest way to receive the ball in FIFA 22, and very often results in a warning, a yellow card, and sometimes even a red card (the player gets excluded from the match). Make sure you take the right angle of attack on the ball before you make the slide.

Clear the ball out of the box

If there is a lot of confusion in your penalty area, there is no point in taking the risk of using a plan to lead out the ball - it may be best to simply kick the ball away to reduce the danger and prevent a goal.

Crossing is Back

FIFA 21 didn't present many opportunities for crossing to play a major part in your buildup or scoring chances. That's changed with FIFA 22. This year, crossing feels like a viable attack option. By pressing Square (X on Xbox), you can send balls into the box and use your strikers to attack the net through the air.

Win Through the Air

In general, the aerial game feels much more deadly this year. If you have pacey strikers up top, use L1+Triange (LB+Y on Xbox) to send a through ball over the top of the defense. This lets your striker run onto the ball and get in behind the defense for a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper.

Master a Skill Move or Two

You don't need to become a skill move fiend to have success in FIFA 22. Of course, you can bother to learn all of the fancy tricks in the game, but as long as you master a few, you'll be in a good spot. We'd recommend getting comfortable with easy skill moves like the fake shot, ball roll, bridge, and drag back.

Use the Right Shot

With goalkeepers given a big buff in FIFA 22, you need to know where and how to shoot. Outside of the box Finesse Shots are great this year. To do this, get a player with a high Curve and then use R1 + Circle (RB + B) from outside of the box. If you can master timed finishing, these shots can be even more powerful.

Pick a Formation That Suits You

There isn't a magic formation that's going to do everything you want. Instead, you need to find something that suits your playstyle. Personally, we like either 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-2-1-2 (2). The former is a great defensive formation that lets you use CDMs to help cover your defense.

Defend with Your CDMs While Learning

Some players are going to hate us for saying this, but when you're just starting out, try not to defend with your centerbacks. The AI defense is usually pretty solid in the back, so you're better off attacking the player with the ball with a CDM. This gives you a bit of a safety net if you mess up.

Make Use of Two Man Press

By holding down R1 (RB) on defense, you can bring a second man over to attack the player with the ball. This puts more pressure on the offense as you start to overload them. You can also use this to pressure the ball with an AI defender while you close off a passing lane with the player you're directly controlling.

Use Dynamic Tactics

Jockey Your Opponent

  • Don't just let the opposition run by you. While it can be difficult to contain opposition attackers with high pace stats, just standing them up can go a long way to stop them from getting in behind. When an attacker is running at you, simply hold down the L2/LT button to perform a jockey. This will make your defender angle themselves towards the ba...

Don't Dive In!

  • We love a heroic slide tackle as much as the next football fan, but mistiming one can often have deadly consequences in FIFA. You are usually much better served by staying on your feet, biding your time, and waiting for the ideal moment to stick a foot in a standing challenge (using O/B button). A slide tackle should only really be used as a last resort or when you are attempting to f…

Know Your Opposition

  • In FIFA 22, it seems much more difficult for a player to score with their weaker foot. As a result, most gamers will do their best to shift the ball onto an attacker's stronger foot before attempting a shot. They will usually use a few flicks or tricks to create the space necessary to do so, meaning it really helps to know what foot a given player favours. For example, always position yourself fo…

Use A Holding Midfielder

  • You really need a holding midfielder in your side, one that will sit in front of the defence and block up opposition attacks. Ideally, they should have good mobility and high tackling stats. Being a good passer is also a bonus so that you can launch a counterattack or two of your own. To really get the most out of your holding midfielder, you should adjust his attacking instructions to 'stay …

Do Not Pull Your Centre Backs Out of Position

  • This is key to keeping things tight at the back. While it can be tempting to rush out with your centre back and try and steal the ball off an on-rushing attacker, this leaves you far too exposed at the back. If you're beaten on the dribble, your opponent will likely get a good scoring opportunity. These players are the best defenders on your team, there is a reason they are the last line of def…

Cut Off The Passing Lanes

  • Pressing the ball carrier may not always be the smartest move. Sometimes you could be better off staying in front of him and attempting to cut off any passing lanes to his teammates. If the opposition are still quite a bit away from your goal, you would likely be better served to wait for him to attempt to play a forward pass and win possession that way. This leaves you less expose…

Switch Players Using The Right Stick

  • It can be frustrating when the CPU does not give you the player you want to control in defensive situations. You can always see what player the L1/LB button will switch to, as that player will have a faded icon over their head. However, you might want to switch to another player. In that case, using the right stick is a better option. Simply push it in the direction of the player you want to co…
