Is training in FIFA 18 worth it?

However, in FIFA 18 it doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as it used to be. Training now has much less impact on your players' physical stats, and you can happily train them without having to worry about them becoming horribly stunted. Despite that, I'd still recommend only giving each player a maximum of two slots per week. Why?

While FIFA career mode is a game based on numbers, it’s common to hear anecdotal evidence. You’ll often hear that when you train youth players, it negatively impacts their physical attributes. While we would agree with this anecdotally, we wan’t to see if the numbers supported that theory. We pulled together the data for ...

Does game time boost player growth?

It was also apparent that game time alone cannot boost player growth, but it’s likely that player form would affect this. Players in good form seem to get bonus growth points at the start of each month. Finally, although trained players are better off overall, some of their attributes will suffer.

1. Stand (ing tackle) and deliver

Tackling is already a hard-hitting, contentious issue but those thinking the standing tackle has been made redundant should think again. Sure, the animation for it is a little awkward at first but it’s far more rewarding this year.

2. Use the catalogue

This sounds obvious but you’ll be surprised at how many overlook it. Don’t be embarrassed: give yourself an online seasons win if you need it, check out the most aggravating celebrations to wind up your opponent and definitely, definitely buy those Ultimate Team coin boosts. You can thank me later.

3. Pro Clubs skill tree

Pro Clubs has been given a very slight makeover when it comes to bulking up your pro’s stats. The RPG-like skill tree may lack the complexities of a fully-fledged adventure game but you’ve still got to be wise with your choices. It’s worth putting in as many points as early as possible into the Physical and Dribbling categories.

4. Net loss

One of the strangest ‘improvements’ in this year’s FIFA is the stiff response whenever you score a goal, thanks to the highly-strung net tension. The netting, however, can be changed under game settings. Just go to the visual tab and change the net tension to ‘Loose’.

5. Look ma, no touch dribbling

No touch dribbling was, frankly, a pretty useless addition to FIFA 17. This year, however, the option to swerve and spin whilst still in control of the ball has been toned down somewhat and mapped to R1/RB.

6. The FIFA trainer is your friend

Whether you’re a FIFA newbie or someone who fondly recalls Song 2 on FIFA 98, the FIFA trainer will be useful to all-comers this year. What began as a very basic tutorial option now has options to see where (through the use of dotted line overlays) your passes should go.

7. Chipped through balls are really, really good

It does what it says on the tin. Lofted through-balls seem to have been given a welcome boost for FIFA 18, with the trajectory of passes now reaching far greater heights so any onrushing attackers have time to position themselves and run onto the ball.

Revive a fallen giant

If you’re a Career Mode fan I’m sure you’ve already read countless “best clubs to use in Career Mode” guides over the years, which definitely have their merits.

Use the Youth Academy

If you are planning on using a lower league team in Career Mode, then do not underestimate the power of the Youth Academy. The feature itself may have been neglected over the years but don’t let its shoddy menu design fool you. It can still add plenty of value to your team both on and off the pitch.

Use the new Sell On fees

To go with the Youth Academy section above, FIFA 18 now gives you the ability to add future sell-on clauses to the contracts of players you’re selling. Which as you can imagine for youth players could result in some large future windfalls should they go-on to fulfil their potential elsewhere.

Setup multiple team sheets

It’s been a few years since FIFA’s Team Management UI got a welcome overhaul, and that process has continued for FIFA 18 with Quick Subs the latest new option for improved Career Mode squad management. However, something I always do when starting a brand new save is setup multiple Team Sheets for my club.

Be specific when scouting

The scouting system in Career Mode is far from perfect, but if you can find the right balance with your search criteria you can find some genuinely great players you may have either forgotten existed, or didn’t know about at all. The only issue is finding the right balance because it’s very east to be too open (i.e.

What is the key to success in FIFA 18?

Quick and accurate short passes are the key to success in FIFA 18. If you can master the difficult Advanced Ground Pass Skill Challenge, you will have an immense advantage in online and offline play. Short passes are relatively slow, so only use them when your teammate is open and close by, preferably facing where the ball is being passed from.

What is the best way to pass in FIFA 18?

Quick and efficient passing of the ball will help you open up an opponent’s defense and give you ample scoring opportunities. The following are some of the different tools at your disposal, along with what skill challenge you should use to practice them. Master each technique, and you will be tearing up defenses in no time.

How to defend in the final third?

Most defending in your final third, the portion of the field stretching from your goal to a few yards outside of your penalty area, should be in the jockeying position. It will help you face your opponent and prepare for a standing tackle or interception. Hold the sprint button to move quicker while jockeying, but be careful not to lose momentum by overshooting the area you want to protect. Use jockeying to seal off passing lanes and force your opponent out wide where they won’t have a clear shot.

How to do an air cross in soccer?

Aim toward them with the left stick and press Square/X to power up a cross. Avoid air crosses toward short players as most defenders are strong and tall, meaning they’ll easily clear the ball.

How far away from the goal should you shoot a free kick?

Use this technique no closer than 25 yards from the goal. After taking the free kick stance, aim the camera between the last two players in the wall who are closest to the side of the net you wish to shoot the ball.

When to use low shot in FIFA 18?

Use a low shot in the penalty box when the keeper is right in front of you and you have no room or time for a finesse shot.

Is the set piece reworked for FIFA 18?

Set pieces have been completely reworked again for FIFA 18. While the changes may seem daunting at first, many of the strategies that have worked in the past carry over to the new game.

We created a new career mode save and picked a team with enough resources to afford the best scouts. We also had to make sure the squad was strong enough as we would be simming six months at a time. Once we had hired three good scouts, we sent them to work. During that first season, we simply focused on scouting en…

Growth

  • We did notice that certain players were growing faster than others, across both saves. This was interesting, but we came to a fairly obvious hypothesis. The larger the gap between current overall rating and potential, the faster that player will have to grow. Assuming that most youth players are around 18, they have lets say 10 years to hit their peak. A player with 55 overall and 85 potential …

Appearances

  • Another assumption we’ve always had is that giving youth players game time is a good way to help them grow. Because we also recorded the number of appearances each player made, we were able to plot these against the number of growth points. As this blog is about whether or not to train youth players, we separated the data from each save and created two graphs. Because t…

Conclusion

  • So, what did we learn from this? Most obvious and expected was that training helps youth players grow more quickly. Secondly, we learned that player growth is faster when there is a significant difference between their overall rating and potential, provided they have years left to ‘peak’. It was also apparent that game time alone cannot boost player growth, but it’s likely that player form w…

Should I Train Youth Players?

  • Our answer is that it depends. If you only ever sim games, then the positives of training outweigh any negatives. Also you’re fine to train youth players if you only intend on raising their OVR and selling them for profit. If however, you’re a purist and play every game, you might want to avoid it altogether or manage it very carefully. The findings in this blog do seem to support the theory th…
