Introduction

New year, new FIFA. One of the biggest changes to Career Mode in FIFA 18 is the overhaul of the transfer system. This is a very positive change in my opinion but it will take time for players to adapt. For example, I’ve heard of lots of people that missed out on transfers because they didn’t realise a confirmation was required.

What This Guide Covers

I”m aiming to cover everything transfer related in this guide. The full end-to-end experience. From finding transfer targets, using the new Transfer Hub system, negotiating and release clauses.

25. VfL Wolfsburg

A great club if you like history and interesting narratives as their story is heavily connected with car manufacturer Volkswagen. The star player in the squad is Mario Gomez but they’ve got a lot of players with at least some growth potential. Promising talents such as Osimhen and Itter make Wolfsburg a good long term option too.

24. Watford F.C

One of a few clubs on this list that might surprise you, don’t forget that Premier League clubs will be well endowed thanks to TV rights money. The Hornets returned to the Premier League in 2015 and quickly silenced their doubters by finishing 13th.

23. Swansea City A.F.C

Just to confuse non-UK readers – The Swans are a Welsh club but play in the English Premier League and would represent England if they made it into European competition. Well-equipped with striking options, the previously-prolific Ivorian Wilfried Bony has just returned to the club and they’ve also taken Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea.

22. Crystal Palace

At the time of writing, Palace have started the season in atrocious fashion – losing their opening seven fixtures. Conceding 17 goals in this time but scoring none is a huge concern for the fans. It’s also baffling, given the quality within the squad.

21. Stoke City

Now in their ninth consecutive year in the Premier League since gaining promotion in 2008. The Potters gained admiration and notoriety in equal measure for their style of play under Tony Pulis. However, the team has come a long way since then and the playing style has been overhauled by Mark Hughes.

20. Southampton

Although the Saints have reluctantly sold many of their best players over the past few years, their squad is still teeming with quality. Virgil van Dijk failed in his attempts to get a move away from the club this summer, so you’ll still have him at your disposal.

19. RB Leipzig

Another club with a fascinating history, albeit a controversial one. Founded in 2009 by energy drink manufacturer Red Bull who bought the playing rights of fifth division side SSV Markranstädt. They ascended all the way to the Bundesliga within eight years, at the displeasure of many clubs and their supporters in Germany.

The New Transfer Negotiation System

In FIFA 18, a lot of career mode has been completely overhauled. One of these changes that seemed to generate the most excitement pre-launch was the new Transfer Negotiation System. In previous versions of the game, transfers were exciting because of their outcome, not because of the process.

Scout the Player First

Had to be the first thing I mentioned. Remember in previous games you used to just ‘Enquire’ about a player? A few days later you’d receive an email telling you that the club wanted £30m for that player and you’d go straight in and offer £25m. Well those days are gone, no more enquiries.

Approach to Buy

Back inside the transfer hub, select your shortlisted player and hit ‘Approach to Buy’. If you see a message about a release clause, you can just pay it but you might want to try and undercut it if possible.

Transfer Fees

If you’ve scouted the player, you should now have two key pieces of information. Firstly their outright value, secondly your scout’s opinion on roughly what your opening offer should be. Remember that there are a few important factors that affect transfer fees:

Player Swap

Going into transfer negotiations, you might already have a player swap in mind. Most players consider this option when they want to upgrade an ageing player or they simply don’t enjoy their playing style. However, you’re sometimes forced to consider this option when a club demands a very high transfer fee.

Sell-on Clause

Another new addition in FIFA 18. Now when buying or selling a player, a sell-on clause can be added. This means the selling club will receive a percentage of the transfer fee the next time the player is sold. This can be really useful when selling younger players that are likely to increase in value.

Delegate to Buy

Your assistant manager can actually help you out with something in FIFA 18. You now have the option to delegate certain negotiations to them. At first you won’t want to do this, you’ll want to enjoy the new negotiation cutscenes. Give it time.

What is the Transfer Hub?

As the name suggests, the Transfer Hub is where you manage all of your transfer activity in FIFA 18 career mode.

Shortlist

The transfer shortlist is nothing new in career mode, but it’s location has changed. Previously you could shortlist players you were interested in to make it easier to find them later. Rather than being a standalone feature, the shortlist in FIFA 18 has been brought into the new transfer hub which makes a lot more sense.

Sent Offers

This tab also seems to be an improvement on previous versions of the game. Previously you’d be looking at offers categorised on their status (Successful and unsuccessful etc). Now you have one single tab to view all offers you have sent in the current season, with a breakdown of their value and status.

Received Offers

Just like the Sent Offers tab, this has also been improved. The design and organisation feels a lot cleaner and simpler to use. Here you’ll find a list of all offers you have received during the current season.

Transfer Listed

Another tab that should be self-explanatory. This will show you all players within your squad that you have added to the transfer or loan lists. You can also filter by loan or transfer to make things easier. This is a lot easier than scrolling through the squad hub to check which players you’ve placed on either list.
