What is Youth Scouting?

This is one of my favourite aspects of career mode and crucial to keeping a save interesting over several seasons. As players in the game get older, they’ll begin to decline and eventually retire. This would shrink the player base massively within a few seasons so the game needs a way to generate new players.

FIFA 19 Youth Scouting Guide Contents

EA didn’t make many changes to career mode this year, youth scouting was no exception. For that reason and the fact that it worked well last year, I’ve kept the same basic structure to walk you through the basics of youth scouting in FIFA 19. When people are looking for FIFA 19 tips to help them in the game, this content is still very relevant.

Lucas Hernandez (OVR 82 – POT 89)

Now a World Cup winner, Lucas Hernandez was France’s starting left back as they marched all the way to gold in Russia over the summer. The Atletico man had his best season to date at club level too, coming in to Diego Simeone’s defence with Filipe Luis (OVR 85) injured for the second half of the campaign.

Alex Grimaldo (OVR 81 – POT 88)

One of many talented Spanish left backs, Alex Grimaldo has become one of the finest defenders in Portugal since moving from Barcelona in 2016. The 23-year-old has now featured over 60 times for the Portuguese giants, notching 10 assists and winning two league titles and two domestic cups.

Benjamin Mendy (OVR 81 – POT 87)

Benjamin Mendy was back up to Lucas Hernandez during France’s World Cup campaign, and judging by his return from injury for Manchester City, a starting berth could in order. The 23-year-old has notched five assists in just 13 appearances for the Citizens, following his Ligue 1 title win at former club Monaco.

Luke Shaw (OVR 79 – POT 84)

Luke Shaw has had a difficult Manchester United career, but his form of this season has earned him another call up to the England squad. The 23-year-old has been plagued by injury since his move to Old Trafford, never playing more than 20 games in a season and having only earned eight England caps since making his debut in 2014.

Jose Gaya (OVR 79 – POT 84)

Jose Gaya made his debut for the Spanish national team in September, following great progress for Valencia over the past four seasons. Aged 23, the left back or midfielder has chalked up close to 150 appearances for the club, claiming 17 assists in that time.

Aaron Martin (OVR 77 – POT 85)

Another Spanish let back, Aaron Martin is out on loan at German side Mainz despite performing consistently for Espanyol for the past three seasons. The defender played over 100 times for the Barcelona-based club, but has now gone straight into Mainz’s starting lineup in the Bundesliga.

Ferland Mendy (OVR 77 – POT 85)

A second left back named Mendy, Ferland Mendy has just had two fantastic campaigns. The first was for Le Havre in the French Ligue 2, which earned him a move to Lyon, and after 35 appearances last year, he found himself in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

What is the difficulty of the youth challenge?

The difficulty of the youth challenge tends to evolve in three phases: 1. Scouting enough players to fill a squad. 2. Finding players with decent stats and/or high potential. 3.

How many players are needed for a matchday squad?

This means you need to build up a squad of at least 18 players very quickly.

Is it realistic to use an underdog club?

It’s probably more realistic to use an ‘underdog’ club that is more likely to take the academy approach. However, it can be just as fun getting rid of all the star players at a big club and starting from scratch. A basic requirement would be a reasonable budget, so that you can afford to hire scouts initially.

Which are the Best Countries to Scout?

First things first, where do you want to dispatch your scout to? You’ll be presented with a choice of 54 countries from different regions. The first question to ask is are some countries better than others for scouting youth players? The answer to that is yes. So let’s dig in to how they differ.

What do the Different Player Types Mean?

Once you’ve decided which country you’re going to get your scouting network setup in (whether because of success rates or cost), you can request that your scout focuses on trying to find a specific player type. These are as follows.

Are Certain Player Types More Common in Certain Countries?

Yes. Every region has a unique likelihood for each player type. This excludes goalkeepers, which are found at the same frequency in every region.

How Much Does it Cost to get a Scouting Network Setup?

Again, this will seem irrelevant if you’ve chosen to play as Manchester City or PSG in your career mode. If however you’re operating on limited funds, this is important. The cost of getting a scouting network setup is based on two factors.

Player Type

Once you’ve signed a player to your academy a few things that might have been vague or obscured before will now be confirmed. The first of these is the player type. In case you missed my rundown of the different player types, go and check it out here . Now you’ll know whether the player you just signed is a Winger, Attacker or Playmaker etc.

Position

A player’s true position will have been obscured up until now. Unless of course you left that player in your scouting report for a few months. For example, let’s take a youth prospect that will be a Right Midfielder (RM). He might be shown in the scouting report as potentially playing in CM, RM or RW.

Overall Rating

Now you’ll be able to see a precise number for a player’s Overall Rating. This number iwill be the biggest factor in your decision of what to do next with any given player. You might be keen on promoting players early, especially if they have a high Overall Rating (60+). This will also be more appropriate if you’re managing a lower league side.

Stats

Another area of interest where you will finally see some actual numbers rather than just ranges. In the youth academy you’ll actually see a player’s stats represented in two ways. Firstly you’ll see a summary of their stats, grouped as follows:

Potential

While this is one of the really interesting numbers, it will still be represented as a range – just to leave you guessing. However, on the 1st of each month you’ll receive a message to say that the latest scouting report is in and you now have better information on all of the players.

Training

If you’ve got a large senior squad, you might have overlooked the fact that you can train youth players in the same way that you would train senior players. While you’re in the training menu you just have to scroll down through your first team players and if you have youth players in that position, they’ll be available for selection.

Signing A Player to The Youth Academy

Image
Right, lets get the obvious thing out of the way. Once you’ve found yourself a decent youth prospect, go into their menu and sign the player. They’ll automatically be added to your youth academy and be on a (usually insignificant) weekly wage of £425.

Position

  • This is the stage where things become a bit clearer in the youth scouting process. A player’s position might have become apparent if you allowed him to be scouted over a few months. However, in most cases you’ll have snapped him up quickly without finding out his primary position. Either way, once you’ve recruited a player to your youth academy, you’ll know exactly w…

Overall Rating

  • Another key piece of information that will now be available to you. This will directly impact whether you’ll promote this player or not. This is especially true if you’re operating with a small squad or going through an injurycrisis. Whether you promote a player from the youth academy will largely depend on the level of your team. For example, a 65 rated youngster is much more usefu…

Potential

  • This is really what you’ll be looking for. Unfortunately it will still be represented by a range that will change over time. You’ll receive an update at the start of each month on the players in your youth academy. Each time this happens, the range that is used to represent a player’s potentialwill shrink. Little by little, the range becomes more accurate. Obviously you’ll be hoping that only the …

Player Type

  • Once a player joins your academy, their player type will be confirmed, if it wasn’t already. This will be really important to you if you’re aiming for a player of a specific type or position. I’ve already mentioned this but player type tends to affect a player’s stats more than anything else.

Age

  • This comes up in the monthly scouting reports but it’s not as important there so I’ve saved it for this part. Youth players can be as young as 15 and as old as 18. You can sign anyone to your youth academy regardless of their age, but you can’t promote someone to the senior squad until they are 16 years old. Annoyingly, the game doesn’t show you a player’s date of birth at this point…

Training Players in The Youth Academy

  • When training was first introduced to career mode, not everybody realised that you could also train your youth players. This was because they’re below your senior squad players so don’t always get seen. First of all I want to share one tip with you, this menu is useful for assessing players. Players with ‘high growth potential’ will have a green upwards graph line symbol on thei…
