FIFA has devised the following formula to calculate the points a team earns from a match. Points = M x I x T x C Match result (M) Win – 3 points, Draw – 1 point, Loss – 0 points If the match is decided at the end of a penalty shootout, then the points awarded are: Win – 2 points, Loss – 1 point

Points are used to rank the teams within a group. Since 1994, three points have been awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss (before, winners received two points).
